Although just barely! The vacation itself was riotously fun, but I came home feeling crummy. (Perhaps no worse than one would expect after spending nine days in a tent with five males, but still… :-D)
I actually felt sick enough to go in and see a doctor, which is something of an oddity for me. I honestly don’t think I have seen my primary care physician for over four years. (I still didn’t, but at least this woman wasn’t a pediatrician or OBGYN, LOL!) As unusual as that occurence is, it wouldn’t be blog-worthy, except…
I had grown.
Not mentally, not emotionally, not spiritually. No, I was an inch taller than I was the last time I checked. (Which was admittedly quite a while ago. But how many people measure themselves in their thirties???)
I have been five foot eight and three quarters since I was thirteen years old. So when the nurse said I was five foot nine and three quarters, it took a moment to register. “Wait a minute,” I asked. “Did you say five foot nine and three quarters?”
The nurse nodded, and I explained the discrepancy. She measured me again, with the same result.
We moved to another room with a different measuring device. I was still closing in on five foot ten.
I have no explanation. My mother said that some very well-nourished women can undergo growth spurts after giving birth, which kind of makes sense. All those excess nutrients and growth hormones have to go somewhere, I guess. I have also heard that your height can vary slighlty depending on the amount of pressure placed on your spine. But seeing as I have consistantly measured in at five eight and three quarters for almost twenty years, this sort of variation seems unlikely. (Although no less likely than a growth spurt in your thirties.)
Anyway you slice it, I am an inch taller than I used to be. I may even be as tall as my mom now, since she has shrunk a little bit. (Spinal pressure, you know!) If that’s true, I’m no longer the shortest adult in my family! (Yeah–we Williamses are TALL!!!)
So, to summarize my rather pointless post:
I am back from vacation.
Fun was had by all.
It is possible to grow in your thirties.
I’ll post a picture of my nearly five-foot-ten-self exploring Cave of the Mounds with the fam on vacation.
